Chaos Theory in Practice

Our Story

Future Arts, Science and Technology Lab - FASTlab - is a transdisciplinary R&D lab established to bridge the gap between cutting-edge STEM research and the complexities of human behavior, creativity, and play.

Founded by Professors Paul Egglestone and Mario Minichiello, FASTlab emerged from a shared vision: to break free from traditional academic silos and create a space where technology, design, and social impact collide.

Driven by the belief that the world’s most pressing challenges—inequality, sustainability, and the evolving digital landscape—demand more than linear solutions, FASTlab embraces applied chaos. This approach allows for creativity, play, and human-centered research to shape real-world innovations.

Our team of creative and inspiring humans—innovators, researchers, and designers—are dedicated to crafting scalable, impactful solutions that empower people, enhance communities, and build a more sustainable future.

By fusing science, art, and community engagement, FASTlab ensures that technological progress is always driven by human needs, creating solutions that make a difference.

Mario’s career is marked by a unique ability to bridge art and storytelling. As a visual journalist, he has reported on significant global events, from the Afghanistan war to the Spycatcher Trials, with his work featured in prominent outlets such as the BBC, The Guardian, and The Times. His approach to illustration—what he describes as “slow food, wave after wave of observation”—has not only shaped his practice but also influenced the field of visual journalism. He is the co-author of the seminal book Reportage Illustration: Visual Journalism, which explores the power of illustration to connect people with news and current affairs in profound ways.

As a Professor of Design and Creative Arts, Mario has held leadership roles at institutions including Loughborough University, Birmingham City University, and the University of Newcastle (NSW).
