About FASTlab

An unusual company.
Built on an unusual
conviction.

Most organisations separate creative practice from engineering rigour. FASTlab was founded on the belief that this separation is precisely why complex evidence problems go unsolved.

Why FASTlab exists

The gap between evidence
and action is one of the most
expensive problems
in public life.

Programmes often run with incomplete evidence about what is working, for whom and why. Investments often continue without a clear view of the evidence for value, outcomes or improvement. Decisions get made on intuition, politics or habit — not on what the evidence actually says.

FASTlab was founded to close that gap — not through better reports or more dashboards, but through governed evidence systems that make the reasoning behind decisions transparent, traceable and trustworthy.

We call this Evidence Intelligence.

What Evidence Intelligence is

Not a report.
Not a dashboard.
A governed system
for trustworthy decisions.

Evidence Intelligence is the layer between data and action. It transforms fragmented, contested, uncertain evidence into decisions that can be explained and defended.

It preserves provenance. It quantifies confidence. It maintains human review. It produces decisions that regulators, funders and communities can trust.

Why creative practice and engineering belong together

Evidence without interpretation
is just data.

Observation
Look carefully
Mario Minichiello spent thirty years as a visual journalist — drawing what he observed, in the moment, without the luxury of later analysis. FASTlab is built on that discipline. The first act of evidence intelligence is careful observation.
Interpretation
Interpret honestly
Paul Egglestone spent two decades in television, where the gap between what happened and what was broadcast was a daily ethical challenge. FASTlab treats interpretation as a governed act — not a creative liberty.
Communication
Show what you found
Evidence that cannot be communicated clearly cannot change decisions. FASTlab's design practice ensures that what the evidence says is legible to the people who need to act on it — not just the people who analysed it.

Why trust matters

Explainability and audit
are design principles —
not afterthoughts.

As AI generates answers faster than organisations can verify them, the question of trust becomes the central design challenge of our time. FASTlab builds systems where trust is not assumed — it is earned, demonstrated and maintained.

The Architecture is designed to make decisions traceable to their evidence, confidence levels explicit and human review points documented. Each implementation requires validation and ongoing review so claims remain proportionate to what the evidence can support.

This is not just good practice. It is the only defensible way to operate in environments where decisions affect real people's lives.

The best evidence of FASTlab's methodology is not a diagram or a framework. It is the body of work produced by two people who have spent their careers at the intersection of careful observation and rigorous communication.

The founders

Two careers spent at
the intersection of observation,
interpretation and action.

Prof Paul Egglestone
Co-founder & Director
Prof Paul Egglestone FRSA
Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, HMRI and the Central Coast Research Institute. Nearly two decades as a television producer — an experience that shaped a conviction that knowledge only matters when it reaches people who can act on it. Paul leads FASTlab's evidence intelligence architecture, product development and government and industry partnerships. Professor of Creative Practice, Avondale University · Visiting Professor, Loughborough University.
Prof Mario Minichiello
Co-founder
Prof Mario Minichiello PhD
Award-winning illustrator, visual journalist and designer. Described as "one of Britain's most skilled, perceptive and provocative illustrators" by Visual Culture in Britain. Three decades at the intersection of observation, interpretation and visual communication. Co-author of Reportage Illustration: Visual Journalism. Mario brings the discipline of the field observer to FASTlab's evidence practice — the conviction that you must look carefully before you can claim to understand. Professor of Design, Loughborough University · Birmingham City University · University of Newcastle (NSW).
